The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law protecting the privacy of student education records (e.g. grades, tuition bill and disciplinary actions). For students enrolled in a post-secondary institution, the rights granted by FERPA are held by the student, regardless of the student’s age or status as a minor.
Students may waive these rights and consent to the release of educational records to parents or guardians while enrolled in the program by filing a Consent to Disclose Student Information form. When completed, this consent form permits Tufts University staff to discuss and disclose private information with authorized persons, such as parents, guardian or other family members.
As permitted by FERPA, Tufts may contact and disclose information to parents, guardians and other persons in a health or safety emergency if necessary to protect your health or safety or that of another. The decision to notify a parent, guardian or another person in such situations will be made according to the professional judgment of university officials and does not require student consent. For students under the age of 21, the University may also inform parents and guardians about violations of any federal, state, or local law, or any University rule or policy that governs the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance.

Disciplinary or Criminal Records
Tufts University reserves the right to review and determine the admissibility of applicants for special, summer student enrollment privileges based on findings during a review of past academic, behavioral, or criminal misconduct. Disclosure of offense(s), and a statement from officials at previous institutions will be required.
Social Security Numbers
Tufts University requests that all applicants provide their Social Security number, if available, at the time of application. The IRS requires schools to report either payments received for qualified tuition and fees or amounts billed for qualified tuition and fees during the calendar year on a form 1098-T. Disclosure of your social security number gives student records personnel another point of identification in our student information system. Further, federal law requires that Tufts University provide tax payers with an IRS form 1098-T, which requires use of your social security number.
