Course Description

Surveys the history of Boston from the colonial era to the recent past. Examines the legacy of Puritanism, the city’s role in the Revolutionary War, the experience of diverse immigrant groups, reform movements, race relations, urban planning (e.g. the Emerald Necklace, the filling of the Back Bay, and the Big Dig), and politics. The course will include at least two walking tours of the city in lieu of class meetings.
